Congratulations to @jes.smyth on release day of her second(!) book!

I'm excited to dive into this one. While it's way outside my typical reading genre (spy fiction), I really enjoyed her first one because it's great writing and a highly engaging story that's hard to put down, and that's always something I can appreciate. She develops relatable characters like a seasoned veteran....which I guess she is now that she has 2 books published!

If you enjoy reading, I highly recommend starting with her first book, Time for Once, and then reading this one.

Ramp pesto pasta with pancetta. 🤩

My neighbor brought us some ramps that he foraged in Wisconsin, so I had to put them to good use!

Made a pesto with blanched ramps, pistachios, freshly grated parmesan, garlic, and olive oil. The flavors were amazing.

Still have a bunch left. Going to pickle the bulbs and make some ramp butter. Any other ideas?

I've been craving homemade French onion soup recently, so I made it on Sunday and it was fantastic.

Slow sautéed 4 white onions in butter, brown sugar, @blacksheepgastronomy worcestershire sauce, and our upcoming beef rub, very low and slow for about an hour. Added them to a crockpot (while I was coaching a soccer game) along with 64oz beef bone broth and fresh thyme. Also sautéed and added some mushrooms (yep, I don't care that they don't normally go in French onion soup).

After cooking on low for a few hours, sliced some French bread, topped with truffle gruyere cheese, Swiss cheese, and parmesan cheese, then broiled and added to each bowl of soup. Topped with more cheese and crispy onions for crunch.

Shrimp & grits for dinner! You know we love those @marshhenmill grits, and the Guinea Flint variety was calling my name tonight.

Sautéed some shrimp seasoned with @meatchurch Blanco in some butter, garlic, and lemon juice. Once it was cooked, added some roasted red peppers, heavy cream, and fortified wine. Let it thicken up a bit and then spooned over the grits, topped with green onions. Absolutely delish.

Another "let's get weird" recipe using whatever is in the fridge and pantry.

•Sautéed some onions, orange bell pepper, and kielbasa in @sauce olive oil.
•Made some @marshhenmill freekeh using chicken stock instead of water. When it was done, stirred in a homemade shawarma rub.
•Made a finishing sauce of honey Greek yogurt, lemon juice, garlic, fresh dill, and chile oil.
•Topped with green onions.

Totally weird collage of ingredients and flavors, but NGL, it was 🔥

When it comes to the act of barbecue, it has one major advantage over other types of cooking. Both have the ability to bring people together, sure, but while most cooking involves a stove, oven, or other inside device, barbecue generally involves cooking in the great outdoors, exposed to the elements, good or bad.

It presents an opportunity to spend time outside, away from creature comforts. Just you, the fire, and whatever creatures roam the land you're on - it is their comfort zone, after all.

Last week's spot had this breathtaking view in the mountains of western North Carolina. The Smoky Mountains set the distant horizon, and since it was still sick season (ht @noahkahanmusic) the views stretched on for miles. Unfortunately, no bears paid a visit, but the 8th different state I've taken this trusty little @pkgrills was an awe-inspiring experience nonetheless.
